World Famous Key Largo Christ Statue Dive History Details
Key Largo is home to the Christ statue Dive and we want to share some History Details with you.
In 1961 Egidi Cressi donated a copy of “II Cristo Degli Abssi” by artist Guideo Galletti, to the Underwater Society of America. This 9 foot tall statue of Jesus Christ with arms raised to the sky is over 4000 pounds. The statue is made of bronze and was placed on the same actual existing location as it sits today back on 25 August 1965.
It is placed at the Key Largo reef named Key Largo Dry Rocks Reef which from a sky view looking down is shaped like a huge hand with fingers spread and the wrist of the hand would be the center. This “wrist” center of this reef is exposed above sea level at low tide twice daily and that is where the name Key Largo Dry Rocks Reef comes from. Many say it would appear as the “hand of God” and the statue of his only son Jesus is placed between the middle and ring fingers on the hand.
From the surface you will see mooring balls D4 and D5 and between them a pencil buoy. This pencil buoy marks the location of the Christ of the Abyss statue of Jesus.
There is much more to learn about the Key Largo Christ Dive History Details. Stay tuned to our blog daily for more details in the future.
