Molasses Reef AM
This morning at N.W. Wellwood Wreckage Area Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary Scuba and Snorkel with Sail Fish Scuba Dive Shop in Key Largo, Florida Keys. The N. W. Corner of Molasses Reef has fully recovered and is thriving. Back in 1984 M/V Wellwood a 400 feet long freighter accidently ran aground in the N. W. corner of Molasses Reef causing extensive damage to the living corals. Many companies like Coral Restoration Foundation, REEF.org, and MOTE have helped rebuild this area over the year.
Sand Island Reef AM
The second site at S. Mooring of Sand Island Reef This is the favorite site of Sail Fish Scuba owner Jennifer Kerr. This site gets its name from a local “story” that back before Hurricane Donna there was a tiny sandy island with 1 lone coconut tree on it at this location. Due to the strength of Hurricane Donna in 1960 the waves at this area exceeded 30 feet. This massive high wave action redistributed all the sand that once was above the water line and tore down the lone coconut tree. The underwater reef has always somehow survived all hurricanes perfectly in tack. The millions of year old clusters of Elkhorn Corals still stand and thrive today. Hurricane IRMA in 2017 toppled and tore up many parts of nearby Molasses Reef but once again Sand Island Reef remained unharmed. Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary is beautiful for both Scuba and Snorkel tours.
Benwood Wall DRIFT Dive PM
This afternoon at E. Benwood Wall This afternoon we treated our group of divers to DRIFT Diving. In front of the Benwood Shipwreck is a lovely deep coral encrusted reef wall making it a perfect location for drift diving. With depth starting at 42 feet and bottoming out at 89 feet this is a very unique location for the Florida Keys dive sites.
French Reef Woody’s Ledge DRIFT Dive PM
The second site at E. French Reef Woody’s Ledge The far East mooring balls at French Reef are known as Woody’s Ledge. We still don’t know why or who gave it this name so we just roll with it. Max depth at this site is 80 feet with an average depth of 55 feet. Top shallowest part above the reef is mostly 38 feet making this an excellent scuba dive site.
