Key Largo Dry Rocks Reef ~ Home of Christ of the Abyss Statue AM
This morning at KLDR / Christ Statue Inst. Alex guided our group of newly certified divers to see the World Famous Christ of the Abyss statue at Key Largo Dry Rocks Reef. How did this statue get there? Many ask this question everyday and here is the answer. In 1961 Egidi Cressi donated a copy of the II Cristo Degli Abssi, by artist Guido Galletti, to the Underwater Society of America. The 9 foot tall statue is attached to a 6 foot tall 3 level concrete base. The statue by it’s self weighs over 4000 pounds, that plus the weight of the concrete, is what keeps it in place even in hurricanes like IRMA in 2017. It was placed in this exact spot back on 25 August 1965. It is located at Key Largo Dry Rocks Reef between moorings D-4 & D-5 in 25 feet of water.
Horseshoe Reef AM
The second site at Horseshoe Reef is excellent in November for Scuba Diving here in Key Largo, Florida Keys. The shallow 26 foot max depth allows for nice long bottom time to explore from the North buoy to the South buoy. Between the 2 moorings you can find and explore several coral reef swim thru areas. The area is surrounded by miles of fields of protected sea grass beds. This sea grass encourages the visits of turtles and schools of fishes.
