Ocean water temperatures in Key Largo and the Florida Keys

Ocean water temperatures Florida Keys vary monthly with August being the warmest and February being the coldest.

The Ocean water temperature may change monthly between a low temperature of 58F to a high temperature of 92F.

Key Largo, Florida Keys is known as a Sub-Tropic area.

Lowest Ocean water temperature I experienced:

I personally remember seeing the low 58F on my dive computer in the year 2006 while doing a guided dive tour at the dive site Minnow Caves in Key Largo.

It was February and the air temperature this day in 2006 was only 42F when I woke up.
Yes, it does get that cold just about each year in the Florida Keys for a few days.
By the time we were out at the morning dive site, Minnow Caves, the air temperature had gone up to nearly 60F. This is for certain the time of year for all divers to be wearing full 5mm wetsuits or even better 7mm wetsuits.

Highest Ocean water temperature I experienced:

The summer of 2008 I looked at my dive computer one day in August and thought possibly it was broken when it was reading 92F and I was about 18 feet deep at the famous Christ of the Abyss dive site in Key Largo.
This was the highest I ever remember the water getting. That summer I took to diving in only my swimming suit for all dives and so did all the guests.

The air temperature that summer I see in my log book I keep of all my dives, was daily 98F to 102F it appears for a few days on end.

Last thing to keep in mind when coming diving or snorkeling in Key Largo, Florida Keys would be that everyone’s tolerance to water temperatures is very different. Just like in the photo above. On the day this was taken the water temperature was 79F. One diver maybe perfectly warm in a 2.5mm shorty wetsuit, while the other diver even though wearing a full 3.5mm wetsuit might be chilly.

I always suggest to divers to pack warmer exposure protection than you suspect you might need. It is always easier to open a zipper, or pull a neckline open and flush with water while diving if you feel a little warm. However, being cold while diving you just cannot fix underwater, and that makes a dive not as much fun.

Be safe diving & have fun!
