Pink Fluffy Growth Keys Reef

Everyone so far seems unsure what this pink fluffy growth actually is.

Should there be a concern about the Pink Fluffy Growth on the Keys Reef.

Before hurricane Irma 10 September 2017 we did not see this pink fluffy growth on the ocean floor in Key Largo.

Now two months after the hurricane it can be found at nearly every single dive site, no matter the depth.

If you google “Pink Fluffy Growth Covering Key Largo Reef Post Irma” you will get a list of sites talking about this stuff.

However no one seems to know yet what it is, or where it came from.

Sail Fish Scuba has recorded it being found at every single Key Largo dive and snorkel site visited post Irma.

During some online research it mentions possibly a higher than normal level of phosphate could be the problem.

At Sand Island Reef, just north of Molasses Reef this pink fluffy growth has attached itself to nearly all the corals and rocks on the bottom of the ocean.

Should There Be Concern

Dive shop owners are asking should there be a concern about the growth of this Pink Fluffy Growth on Keys Reef.

When Lion Fish started to appear a few years ago, dive shop owners asked similar questions.

Protecting the living coral reef is a great concern for all the Florida Keys dive shop owners.

If there is anything that can start to be done to halt the growth of this pink fluffy stuff we want to know.
