Spiegel Grove Shipwreck AM

This morning at Double Dip on Spiegel Grove Shipwreck PADI Inst. Alex guided divers around the massive Thomaston-class of dock landing ship which was a former USA Navy ship. This ship had been sunk here at Dixie Shoal, 6 miles off Key Largo on purpose. The date of sinking was 17 May, 2002. Lots of corals have grown on this ship in the past 17 years and many fish now call it their home. Before it’s sinking it was first launched on 10 November 1955 and commissioned on 8 June 1956.

When we say “Double Dip” this means we did our first and second dives of the morning right here at this same dive site.

Key Largo Scuba Spiegel Grove Morning Dives & Reef Afternoon Dives

Horseshoe Reef PM

This afternoon at Horseshoe Reef Lovely shallow reef diving in Key Largo, Florida Keys. PADI Instructor Mike guided and got great underwater photos during the scuba dive. The shallow depths of Key Largo, Florida Keys living coral reef allows for longer bottom times and shorter surface intervals. Many coral reef fish call the shallow reef and sea grass beds home. Today we were delighted with seeing many varieties of grunts and parrot fishes. The biggest highlight of this site was seeing a huge Moray Eel and 3 very large Southern Stingrays.

North North Dry Rocks Reef PM

The second site at N. N. Dry Rocks Reef winter water temperatures make the corals thrive at this site. In the summer the water temperatures get nearly up to 90 degrees F. which can make some of the corals appear like they are dying. There are so many wonderful soft corals to enjoy at this site divers just don’t know what direction to be looking. Getting to see some large Angel Fish was a highlight and seeing a nice size grouper a plus. Best thing we spotted was a Slipper Lobster and this made it totally worth the cooler water temps. today.
